Gimme Indie Rock - Part Two
January 10, 2011 - 05:23 PM
Here's another batch of highlights from that Indie Music CD buy. If you missed part one, it's here.

We got a ton of Yo La Tengo (bio)--pretty much their entire discography. If you're unfamiliar, there's at least one greatest hits collection (and it's a double CD), but I Can Hear The Heart Beating as One is also a good place to start. Here's a track from it as well as a live version of one of my favorite of their tracks. The studio version is on their excellent And Then Everything Turned Itself Inside Out.

Speaking of Yo La Tengo, we did get in one CD by Dump, bassist James McNew's solo outing. Allmusic calls it "an unbelievably charming album" and gives it 4.5 stars.

Archer Prewitt was a member of The Cocktails and is still a member of The Sea and Cake. The latter band have always been a big seller at Vortex, but few people seem to be aware of Prewitt's solo records, which I prefer over Sea and the Cake's output. At the moment we've got White Sky, Three, and Wilderness, all of which Allmusic gives 4.5 stars (outta 5). They're wonderful pop gems. Here's a track from each, in that order.

You might already have The Go! Team's Proof of Youth, but do you have the US version with the bonus disc? There was one in this lot. Here's the opening track from the album:

Out of the ashes of Red Red Meat came Califone. Taking influence from blues, folk, pop, and appalachia, they've put out a stunning body of work. We got in a bunch of their albums, including a few we rarely see. Here's tracks from Heron King Blues and Roots and Crowns.

Dungen are a Swedish psychedelic band. You either love them or hate them. Here's Panda, the first track from their album ta det lugnt.

Allmusic gives Six Organs of Admittance's Dark Noontide album 4.5 stars (outta 5) saying, "While still operating within a tradition that includes such blues/raga guitarists as John Fahey and Sandy Bull, Dark Noontide brings vocals to a more prominent position." Six Organs is essentially guitarist Ben Chasny. We have a few 6OOA albums in at the moment. Here's one track:

Amsterdam-based Elisabeth Esselink records under the name Solex. One of her best albums is Low Kick and Hard Bop, which was among this collection. Here's a track from the album, of which Allmusic says, "most fans of clever, challenging pop music will find that Low Kick and Hard Bop speaks to them."

David Ivar of Herman Dune is easily one of my favorite pop singer-songwriters. He's often compared to Jonathan Richman because they both deal with love from a youthful/innocent perspective. We have two Herman Dune CDs at the moment, including what many consider their masterpiece: Giant. Herman Dune CDs very rarely come into the shop used and are normally pricey new as they're all imports. Here's two tracks, one from Giant and the other from Not On Top, which was the first HD track I ever heard.

Quasi is what you get when you put drummer Janet Weiss (of Sleater-Kinney) and multi-instrumentalist Sam Coomes (of Heatmeiser, along with Elliott Smith) in a room together. The duo only released a few albums, but Featuring "Birds" is considered their best. Here's Our Happiness is Guaranteed:

Shellac! Love 'em or hate 'em, here's a live track from Excellent Italian Greyhound ("a stellar accomplishment from a truly singular band" -- Allmusic):

Not everything in this buy was "rock". There was some drone, electronic, and then this: Tied + Tickled Trio. We got in their Aelita album. They're a German ensemble featuring two members of The Notwist. Wonderful stuff. Here's a live track of the band:

Jan Jelinek's Loop-Finding-Jazz-Records was also part of this buy. Allmusic says that "each listen to Loop-Finding-Jazz-Records reveals another intriguing layer, and this is certainly one of the more inviting records in the world of electronic listening music" and gives it 4.5 outta 5. Here's the album's "Moire":

That's all she wrote. For today, anyway.

Oh, and since you read this far down, here's a link to a free RJD2 EP download.
