Roll the Dice on CD on Digitalis
July 30, 2010 - 10:31 AM
Update: Note that we'll be closed this coming Monday (Aug 2) for the holiday.

First, some store news: Classical is now GONE. All of it. We were going to offer 50 percent off remaining stock for one week and we did it for five, which I think is more than fair. Even at that only about 30 percent of it sold, which says a lot about the remaining inventory. Those upset about this deletion, I feel your pain, but there simply was no other solution. The reason we do no longer carry classical is that none of the staff listens to the genre which makes buying it and pricing it very difficult and a zero sum game. We recommend Second Vinyl (10 Wellesley Street) or Amoroso (4 St. Patrick) for your Classical fix.

We have now moved Jazz into Classical's old home. This may be temporary--we're thinking of some other solutions as that space is not quite big enough for Jazz. Until another solution comes up, it'll be under the window.

New sections are coming as soon as I get a chance to wrangle them together. We're thinking Soul/R&B, Ambient/Experimental/Electronic, and maybe Metal. If you have suggestions for what you'd like added, by all means mention them and we'll see if we can accommodate.

Some new vinyl arrived yesterday (both new and used), including a bunch of jazz (Coltrane, Blakey, Gordon, Moncur III, Pepper). Here's a list of what I can remember:

Tool - 2LP ltd ed. picture disc
Panda Bear 7"
Husker Du - Metal Circus
Beck - Guerro
Eminem - Recovery
Tina Brooks - True Blue
The National - High Violet, s/t, and Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers
Joy Division - Closer
Svarte Greiner - Penpals Forever (Digitalis; in on CD as well; vinyl is ltd to 450 copies and is already sold out from the label)
Soundway's two 3LP sets: The World Ends Part A and Part B
Saigon Rock & Soul: Vietnamese Classic Tracks 1968-1974 (2LP on Sublime Frequencies)

A bunch of you have asked about the new Mississippi Records releases I mentioned a few posts previous. They're on order but have not arrived. Those who have emailed about them will get a heads-up when we've got them in-hand. MR are somewhat notorious for announcing titles early, so we may have these very soon or not for a while--it's impossible for me to say. However, I can say with certainty that there's no doubt we'll get them as soon as they're available. Of course, I'll announce their arrival here on the site as well. We have a different (faster, cheaper) source for MR titles than anyone else in the city so should have them first and a couple bucks cheaper than everyone else, just like we do with all other MR vinyls.

We also received a heap of nice used LPs of some contemporary artists (Cat Power, Paul Weller, Tom Petty, and a few others).

Someone brought in a bunch of Emerson, Lake and Palmer Japanese CDs as well as a complete set of those UK Rolling Stones CDs with the miniature album art repros.

Lastly, we also got stock on the Roll the Dice album on CD (it's out of print on vinyl), as well as stock of the latest CDs by The Gaslight Anthem, National, Great Big Sea, Stars, Nirvana, Dum Dum Girls, Discovery, Black Keys, Tom Petty, Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse, Jonsi, Sting, Sun Burned Hand of the Man, Jimmy Webb, New Pornographers, Melissa Etheridge, KD Lang, and a few others I can't recall off the top of my head.

As mentioned in my last post, a bunch of new used vinyl will hit the floor shortly as we had multiple customers promising to bring in lots of titles over the coming days. Indeed, some came in today and has been priced and put out. Among them were multiple

Rolling Stones
Grateful Dead
John Mayall
Beatles
Allman Brothers
The Band
Miles Davis
Cream
Hendrix
Clapton

There were also some nice near-mint 5- and 6-LP box sets: Clapton, Allman Brothers, Dylan, and a Muddy Waters on Chess, all with their booklets and wax in great shape.

In addition, there are some nice new vinyl pieces which came in last week that I forgot to post about:

Joy Division
Doris Duke
Mono
Hendrix

and a few others I can't remember off the top of my head.

The Soft Machine 2LP that came out ltd to 500 on Record Store Day has now come out domestically so we've lowered the price of the ones we have on hand. Just 23.99 for the German import.

And... an update on the Classical section. I had initially said it would be gone by last Friday but the combination of heatwave and soccer made it a slow week so we're keeping it a bit longer, still at 50% off. However, it'll probably be gone very soon (less than a week, I'd guess).

We haven't completely decided what we're going to do with the space made available by the classical, but we'll probably be putting together the long-requested R&B/Soul and Ambient sections. We're also open to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), so please send any you have along.

Starting next week we'll no longer be stocking classical music

We've decided to get rid of our Classical Music. Simply put, it sells almost as poorly as hip hop and cajun music--though it takes up 20 times the space.

So, from July 2 to July 9, Classical Music will be offered at 50% off. Get it while you can. After that, it's gone.

Just a reminder that the Annual Summer Sale starts this Saturday. Here's a breakdown:

Sale runs Saturday June 26 - Wednesday June 30. Each day the discount will increase 5% on remaining used stock.

June 26 - 30% off
June 27 - 35% off
June 28 - 40% off
June 29 - 45% off
June 30 - 50% off

Discount is good on all used CDs, DVDs, Vinyl, and Blu-Ray discs. 10% off the new inventory.

We expect it to be very busy. If you've been to our annual summer sale before or our boxing week sale, you'll know what I mean. As we did last boxing week, if you're buying a huge qty of cds, we may take your items and ask that you come back hours or days later to pick them up so that fulfilling your order doesn't force the massive line behind you to wait a crazy amount of time. However, this decision will be up to the staff. We don't want people handing us a 10 cds and saying they'll be back in an hour.
