Marissa Nadler - Covers CD. A Vortex Exclusive!
September 03, 2010 - 11:21 AM
Two nice bits of news for today: the Marissa Nadler Covers CD that's exclusive to Vortex has arrived. Second, for the first time ever we're having a DVD & Blu-Ray sale!
DVD & Blu-Ray SALE
The DVD & Blu-Ray sale will run from Thursday September 9th through Sunday September 12th. If you purchase less than 10 titles, we'll discount your total by 30%. If you purchase 10 or more titles, the discount jumps to 50%! There are a few rules to the sale:
1. Titles must be priced at least $6.99 to count towards the 10. If they're less expensive, we'll still discount them but they won't qualify for getting you the higher discount.
2. Titles must be purchased in one transaction. You cannot purchase 8 on Saturday and 5 on Sunday and expect the higher discount. Not gonna happen. Please don't ask the staff to do this for you.
3. Box sets count as one title, regardless of how many films or discs are inside.
4. Discount is on DVDs and Blu-Rays only. Yes, this does include Criterion titles, TV shows and box sets, documentaries, foreign and indie films. CDs and Vinyl will not be discounted.
That's it! We'll be open from 10 - 10 Thurs through Saturday and 11 - 6 on Sunday. Hope to see you there.
Remember to join our mailing list if you want to hear about our future sales.
Marissa Nadler Covers CD
As mentioned in a previous post, Vortex is the only shop offering up Marissa Nadler's new Covers CDR. The only other way to purchase one is directly from the Boston-based singer-songwriter.
Who is Marissa Nadler? Here's a few things others have said about her:
"[Nadler] blends the traditions of British folk and dream pop into an atmosphere all her own … both timeless and otherworldly.” -- AllMusic Guide
"Nadler has the sort of voice that you'd follow straight to Hades. Her luxurious, resonant soprano is immediately transfixing, and throughout these songs it envelops the listener like a dense fog rolling in off the moors. ... her unadorned arrangements recall the rain-weary solitude of early Leonard Cohen met with Mazzy Star or Opal at their most hazily narcotic ... Nadler's lyrics showcase a perceptive eye and a genuine empathy for her creations; and when coupled with that intoxicating voice the resulting landscape is one you may want to get lost in for a century or two." -- Matt Murphy, Pitchfork
"Like those of the Greek sirens, Nadler’s sonorous voice often leads its admirer to dark places. ... she’s simply someone adept at getting in touch with life’s darker side, and an artist skillful enough to make exceedingly palpable the emotion with which she imbues her work ... her rich vocals can be bewitching." -- Adam Strohm, Dusted Magazine
"... few in the New Folk clique can rival her bewitching talent." Nathan Hogan, Dusted Magazine
"... she never has to reach for notes, only to open her mouth and they pour like honey, slowly, purposefully ... her imaginative narratives enter the human being and root themselves there for lifetimes. ... Disturbing, beautiful and unforgettable, Songs III: Bird on the Water is among the most arresting recordings of 2007 thus far and sets a new high-water mark for this seemingly limitless songwriter." -- AllMusic review of Songs III: Bird on the Water
"Nadler does what she does so very well." -- MusicOMH
"... She has the market cornered when it comes to being both simultaneously icily detached from and heartbreakingly involved in her material. It’s a quality that makes her absolutely unique in the vocal stakes, perhaps even incomparable." -- Scott Sinclair, Wears The Trousers magazine
The Vortex-exclusive CD is on sale now for $12.99 and contains covers if 17 of her favourite songs. Listen to some of her songs and covers in these Youtube videos:
